MANILA, Philippines -- The active low-pressure area off Mindanao has strengthened into a tropical depression that has been named "Karen."
Although still too far off to directly affect the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Karen will likely intensify within the next six to 12 hours.
Karen was last tracked 700 kilometers east of Tandag, Surigao del Sur with maximum, packing sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center as it moved northwest at 7 kph.
It is expected to be 600 km east of Siargao Island by Wednesday morning and 460 km east of Borongan, Eastern Samar by Thursday morning.
