ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines -- Soldiers arrested two suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf said to have been involved in the 2001 kidnapping of 21 persons, including three Americans, from the Dos Palmas resort in Palawan, a military official said Thursday.
Captain Alberto Caber, spokesman of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division, said Jojo Imam Pai and a certain Aling were captured by troops of the 101st Infantry Brigade around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday in Sitio Bukana, Barangay Usukan, Labason, Zamboanga del Norte.
They have been taken here for custodial debriefing.
The 2001 Dos Palmas kidnapping led to the deaths of Americans Guillermo Sobero, who was beheaded, and Martin Burnham, a missionary killed during rescue operations. Burnham’s wife Gracia survived.
The rest of the hostages were either released or escaped during clashes with pursuing troops.
