Secretary Joel Villanueva of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) might no longer seek a Senate seat, and instead remain in the Cabinet for a possible new post, sources said.
President Benigno Aquino III has reportedly asked Villanueva to shun his senatorial ambitions so that he could continue helping him run the affairs of government departments.
From his post as director general of TESDA, the country’s prime agency
in charge with technical vocation education and training, Villanueva
could be assigned to a new Cabinet post with “bigger responsibilities,” the sources said.
Villanueva, who was a three-termer in the House of Representatives, earlier said he was considering joining the senatorial race in May 2013 so he could return to legislative work.
He was among the possible candidates often mentioned by the President, although he was not among the six names that Aquino announced early this week.
