MANILA, Philippines -- Activists who fought against the Marcos dictatorship will gather at Club Filipino in Greenhills Wednesday evening to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the murder of Lean Alejandro.
Alejandro, who, as chair of the University of the Philippines Student Council and, later, secretary of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan figured prominently in the ani-dictatorship struggle, was assassinated on September 19, 1987, shortly after a failed coup attempt by rightwing military rebels.
“It has been 25 years but we, Lean’s family, friends, and colleagues continue to miss him not only for the many ways he inspired and enriched us, but moreover, because we know that had we not lost him, he would have made a big difference to our people’s lives,” a statement released on the even of the commemoration said.
Invited to speak at the event are former Senator Wigberto “Bobby” Tanada, Susan Magno Antepuesto, former UP President Dodong Nemenzo and Undersecretary Alex Padilla.
Several projects “to continue Lean’s legacy” will also be launched.
