MANILA, Philippines -- The Commission on Appointment on Wednesday confirmed the nomination of Manuel Roxas II as secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government after Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago withdrew her threat of a veto on his confirmation.
No objection was raised when Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile announced the approval of Roxas’ nomination.
Santiago had earlier invoked Section 20 of the CA Rules, which allows a member of the commission to veto a nomination, after Roxas did not attend a hearing she called to look into the issues raised against resigned Interior Undersecretary Rico Puno.
But Senator Vicente Sotto III appealed to Santiago to withdraw her motion.
“Mr. President, my high intelligent quotient dictated that he must be considered. Therefore I withdraw my motion to suspend the consideration on the nomination of Secretary Roxas,” Santiago said.
