After deposed President Ferdinand Marcos and his family fled the Philippines in 1986, hundreds of political prisoners were released. But while they were no longer captives, the effects of the horrors of Martial Law kept their minds locked in terror.
Ex-detainees had to recover from the psychological and emotional effects of their ordeals such as rape, torture, and other forms of abuse that they endured while they languished in prison. Many had to adjust to a new life with their children who grew up without their parents. Those who lost their loved ones to summary executions and enforced disappearances had to learn how to deal with constant, crippling pain.
In this documentary, "Beyond the Walls of Prison," produced by AsiaVisions Media Foundation, ex-detainees speak of how they are healing themselves from the wounds of their frightening past.
