Police on Saturday announced the arrest of a ranking Communist party of the Philippines-New People’s Army member, identifying the rebel as the finance officer of the CPP-NPA in Panay.

The CPP-NPA officer was identified as Mateo Suarez, alias Badong. He was arrested by a combined team of policemen and soldiers in his family's house Friday in Barangay Carmelo, Banate, Iloilo, Regional Police Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr. said.

Cruz was reportedly visiting his family when military sources tipped authorities off on his presence.

"He is 58 years old and a resident in the place," Cruz said. "Based on police records, Suarez is the finance officer of the Panay Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army."

Suarez had a warrant for his arrest. He is wanted for murder and illegal possension of firearms.

"He is presently detained at the Banate Police Station," Cruz said, adding that they recommended that he not be granted bail.
