(UPDATED - 11 p.m.) MANILA, Philippines - Violence erupted as authorities tried demolished shanties in Makati City's Guatemala Community on Monday.

Reports said the residents and protesters started throwing rocks at the demolition team, prompting authorities to retreat and take shelter.

In an earlier advisory, the militant urban poor group Kadamay said residents of the Guatemala Community received reliable information that authorities would push through with the demolition despite earlier pronouncements contrary to this. The demolition was carried out late Monday afternoon.

An estimated 300 families were affected by the demolition. The Makati City government is set to construct a three-story multipurpose building to include basketball and badminton courts for Barangay San Isidro.

The city government earlier issued a deadline for residents of the 800-square-meter compound to vacate the place but they refused to do so.
