MANILA, Philippines - A renegade commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) whose group turned into banditry was killed in a firefight against government forces Monday afternoon in Midsayap, North Cotabato, a military official said.
Lt. Col. Roy Galido, commanding officer of the 40th Infantry Battalion, identified the fatality as Mustapha Gundalanga alias "Commander Tha," a resident of Barangay Tubak in Aleosan, North Cotabato.
Galido said the government had offered a P12 million-reward to anyone who could lead authorities to Gundalanga.
He said Gundalanga’s group was responsible for the harassment of military and police detachments including civilian communities that led to massive evacuations in Barangay Baliki in Aleosan.
Based on military and police records, Gundalanga was among the commanders loyal to Ameril Umbra Kato, former commander of the MILF’s 105th Base Command.
