DAVAO CITY - Security personnel of the city government here arrested a call center agent for trying to steal a Philippine flag from the flagpole of the City Hall early Friday morning.

But when 23-year-old Markxell Inabiogan was brought to the nearly San Pedro Police Station, he explained that he had no intention of stealing the flag

“I just do not want . . . the flag [to] be wet from the rain,” he told police investigators.

But according to retired Police Manuel Anahaw, team leader of the Davao City Hall security, Inabiogan was not authorized to lower the flag.

The flag retreat, he said, is done every Friday afternoon.

Inabiogan was caught by security guards while lowering the flag from its pole early dawn on Friday.

Security staff made the arrest because they did not want the suspect to make fun of the flag or replace it with something else.

Inabiogan is now facing theft charges as authorities are still looking into other possible violations that he made with regards to the handling of the Philippine Flag.
