MANILA, Philippines - Everyone lives and dies on the land, as the speakers at a forum organized by the Campaign for Land Use Policy Now! (CLUP Now!) kept reiterating on Tuesday.

At the center of the discussion was the need for a national land use policy, which affects not just faceless sectors summed up in words such as "urban poor" or "fisherfolk," but every Filipino awaiting the passage of the National Land Use and Management Act, or House Bill 6545.

Mentioned by President Benigno Aquino III in his first State of the Nation Address - "Ipasa na po natin ang National Land Use Bill (Let us pass the National Land Use Bill)." - the piece of legislation was approved by the House of Representatives in September. A Senate hearing on the bill is scheduled on December 10.
