Unlicensed weapons seized from Lanao del Sur mayor's home

COTABATO CITY, Philippines -- Firearms were seized from the house of a mayor in Lanao del Sur as police intensified its drive to ensure safe elections in May.
Chief Superintendent Noel Delos Santos, police director for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, said the raid on the house of Marantao Mayor Mohammad Ali Abenal on Tuesday yielded two cal. 30 light machineguns, two M-16 Armalite rifles, a cal. 22 rifle, all unlicensed, thousands of bullets, a cal. 50 machine gun tripod and two machine gunner shields.
Present during the raid were acting ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman, Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal Adiong and officials of Marantao.
Abenal will be charged for violating the election gun ban.
Adiong took custody of the mayor and promised to present him to the court.
Police and military authorities say there are an estimated 25,000 loose firearms in the hands of politicians and lawless elements in Lanao del Sur.
