CEBU CITY, Philippines -- Former Senator John Henry “Sonny” Osmena is the new mayor of the western Cebu city of Toledo, defeating the incumbent, Aurelio Espinosa.
The 78-year old veteran politician, who ran as an independent candidate, took 38,670 votes to the 31,670 of One Cebu’s Espinosa.
It was Osmena’s first foray into politics after a long hiatus.
His running mate, former third district representative Antonio Yapha, edged out Dydee Zambo 38,937 votes to 38,720.
Aside from serving as senator, Osmena has also been a congressman and a councilor, vice mayor and officer-in-charge of Cebu City.
Osmena was wounded during the August 21, 1971 grenade attack on the “miting de avance” of the Liberal Party at Plaza Miranda, which killed 11 persons and was among the justifications cited by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos in declaring Martial Law the next year.
He went into exile in the United States during the dictatorship and returned to the Philippines after the assassination of LP leader Benigno Aquino Jr. in 1983.
