BORACAY ISLAND, Philippines - The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is standing its ground on the issuance of Forest Land Use Agreement for Tourism (FLAGT) to the controversial West Cove Resort in Boracay, saying the development has complied with all the necessary requirements.
New CENRO head Merlita Ninang said that she had reviewed the issuance of FLAGT to the said resort and found no environmental violation. "As far as the DENR is concerned, the West Cove did not commit any violations, thus we are standing by on our FLAGT issuance to the said resort," she said. Ninang recently replaced former CENRO head Merly Aborka.
The West Cove Resort is currently still closed pending the decision of the local government unit of Malay. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has been issuing FLAGT to resorts here to determine their environmental sustainability.
The West Cove Resort has been speculated to be owned by Sarangani congressman and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao has denied all such speculations. The resort is officially owned by businessman Crisostomo Aquino, Pacquiao's friend and official flag bearer whenever he has a fight.
Earlier, West Cove manager Benhur Mobo said they started operating the said resort after the DENR had given them the green light to proceed with its operation.
