MANILA, Philippines - Amid calls to postpone local polls, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced that it would hold voters' registration for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls next month.
The poll body is expecting that two million people will register for the SK polls and about 740,000 for the barangay polls, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said Tuesday.
He said the Comelec was thinking of putting up satellite registration centers at the barangay level to encourage more people to register.
“Voter’s registration for the barangay and SK elections is on July 22-31. Kasi aabot na siya sa time restriction na 90 days before election and July 22 is the earliest we can do it,” Jimenez said.
The polls will be held on October 28. People aged 15 and not more than 18 on the date of the elections can register as SK poll voters
“If you’ll be 18 on October 29, then you are qualified to register. But if you will turn 18 on October 28, you cannot register because you are already 18 then on election day,” Jimenez explained.
Meanwhile, people eligible to register as barangay poll voters are those who turned 18 after the voters' registration ended in October last year for the 2013 elections.
Earlier, Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos filed Senate Bill 3296 proposing that the barangay and SK polls be held instead on the last Monday of October 2015 and every five years thereafter.
Marcos said his bill would save billions of pesos for the government, which could be used to fund other aspects of national development.
There have also been moves in the Senate to synchronize the barangay and SK polls with the May 2016 national and local elections, among them, Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr.'s Senate Bill 3242.
