MANILA, Philippines -- The chairperson of the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. thanked President Benigno Aquino III for serving as a “lucky charm” for Bea Rose Santiago, who won this year’s Miss International pageant in Tokyo, Japan Tuesday night.

In a brief statement sent to media moments after Santiago’s victory, Stella Marquez Araneta acknowledged the significance of Aquino’s encounter with the 23-year-old, 5’9” model last week.

In a speech he delivered during a meeting with leaders of the Filipino community in Tokyo on December 12, Aquino wished for Santiago a victory similar to Megan Young’s triumph in the Miss World pageant in Bali, Indonesia in September.

In appreciation, Santiago -- who attended the event held on the eve of the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit -- thanked the President and even took a selfie with him after his speech.

“Thank you, President Benigno Aquino III, for wishing Bea luck in the pageant. We think this served as Bea’s lucky charm. Congratulations, Bea. Thank you for giving the Philippines a wonderful Christmas gift,” Araneta said in her statement.
