Like Colgate for toothpaste: The 'Pajero' bishops and the absence of the devil in the details

InterAksyon.com
The online news portal of TV5

MANILA, Philippines - Colgate for toothpaste, Frigidaire for refrigerator, Kodak for pictures and films, and Xerox for photocopying.

Filipinos are indeed fond of indulging in generalizations. And the absence of the devil in the details could be the reason why Catholic prelates were lumped in news reports as the "Pajero bishops" or those who own "MitsuBISHOP" Pajero and Isuzu "SaPARI," according to punsters.

Seven bishops acquired the following vehicles using funds from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office: secondhand Nissan Pathfinder, Mitsubishi Strada, Toyota Grand Hiace, Mitsubushi Strada pickup, Toyota Hiace Grandia, Mitsubishi Montero, and Isuzu Crosswind.

InterAksyon.com did some research to determine what types of vehicles these are and how much the autos cost.

TOYOTA HIACE GRANDIA

It is a van produced by multinational automaker Toyota Motor Corporation headquartered in Aichi, Japan. Most of the versions of the vehicle are rear-wheel drive, but four-wheel-drive versions are also available in the market.

In the Philippines, the first Toyota Hiace was sold in 1995 with a diesel engine, which later became popular as a family van. In 2001, a 3.0 diesel Hiace Super Grandia was launched in the country, which had a standard five-speed manual transmission.

ISUZU CROSSWIND

It is an Asian utility vehicle with an automatic transmission that became popular in the '90s as a crossover between the minivan and the sport utility vehicle. For several years, the Isuzu Crosswind, manufactured by Japanese car maker Isuzu Motors Ltd, was among the most carjacked vehicles in Metro Manila.

MITSUBISHI MONTERO:

It is a seven-seater sport utility vehicle manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors, a multinational automobile maker headquartered in Minato, Tokyo Japan.

The Montero sport models being sold in the Philippines have four-speed automatic transmissions fitted with Mitsubishi’s INVECS II or Intelligent & Innovative Vehicle Electronic Control System. The Montero Sport 4x4 models have super select four-wheel drive system that offers shift on-the-fly driving modes.

MITSUBISHI STRADA

It is a compact, urbanized pickup, four-wheel-drive truck also produced by Mitsubishi, which was originally known as Mitsubishi Forte in Japan from 1978 to 1986 until the brandname was changed to Strada.

The Strada 4x2 comes with power windows, CD player with FM/AM tuner stereo, central locking, high contrast instrument meters, and high grade sport-type fabric seats.

NISSAN PATHFINDER

It is a four-door sport utility vehicle manufactured by the multinational Nissan Motors also headquartered in Japan.

WHAT IS AN SUV?

According to wordIQ.com: "SUV or sport utility vehicle also called off-roader is a vehicle that combines the load-hauling and passenger-carrying capacity of a large station wagon or minivan with features designed for off-road driving. In more recent years, the term has also grown to encompass vehicles with similar size and style that are marketed as sport utility vehicles, but which do not actually incorporate substantial off-road features."

According to iloveindia.com: "Sport utility vehicles, or SUVs for short, are a kind of vehicles considered best for off-road driving and carrying large families"

"By off-road driving, we mean driving a vehicle on muddy areas, snowy regions and jungle roads. Driving wagons, sedans and hatchbacks are pretty difficult on such roads. As such, SUVs come in handy, as they drive through these areas easily and comfortably. Thus, a SUV is rightly termed as a rugged automotive that blends the performance of a truck with the passenger comfort of a station wagon, delivering an overall high-performance vehicle."
