MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino III presided over a lengthy command conference in Camp Aguinaldo on Friday but did not discuss either the tensions in the South China Sea, which the government has been referring to as the West Philippine Sea, or Jonas Burgos, the missing activist the military has been ordered to surface by the Supreme Court.
After being made to wait for hours in a small room, journalists hoping to interview Aquino were faced only by Armed Forces chief of staff Eduardo Oban, who said the only matters discussed were the counterinsurgency campaign Oplan Bayanihan and the military modernization program, which includes upgrading the coast watch system, particularly around Palawan.
"We briefed the President about upgrades we're undertaking particularly in Palawan area ... something we have to do pertaining to maritime domain protection," Oban said.
