Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo has remitted a down payment of PhP8 million filing fee to the Supreme Court, sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), toward her counter-electoral protest against former senator Ferdinand Romualdez “Bongbong” Marcos, who filed his protest over Robredo’s victory in the 2016 National Election.

Part of the cash, said Robredo’s camp, was raised with borrowings from her friends as well as relatives of her late husband, Jesse, who used to be Secretary of the Interior and Local Government when he perished in a plane crash off the island province of Masbate.

Robredo had been ordered to pay the P8 million as the first tranche of the filing fee, “within a non-extendible period of five (5) days from notice of Resolution,” SC Spokesperson Theodore O. Te said.

She has until July 14 to settle the balance of P7 million to complete the P15-million filing fee.

The high court designated June 21 as the first “face-off” between the two sides. This would be the initial preliminary conference for Marcos’s protest and Robredo’s counter-protest.
