MANILA, Philippines – Two brothers suspected of using illegal drugs were shot while asleep by unknown assailants in Tondo, Manila on Monday, May 15.

The victims were identified as Rudy and Ramil Fernandez, who were sleeping on the side of Mata Street in Tondo, Manila when they were targeted by two unidentified motorcycle-riding assailants at about 2 a.m.

The perpetrators wearing face masks were seen roaming in the area before pumping five bullets into the victims. Rudy was hit in the chest and the shoulder while Ramil was hit in the thigh. They were rushed to Tondo Medical Center.

According to Eric Simbiling, chairman of Tondo’s Barangay 108-Zone 9, the brothers were garbage scavengers who were previously jailed numerous times because of theft.

He said the brothers were drug users who had not yet surrendered to authorities.

Even though there were closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in the area, no footage was recovered since the devices were broken.

Police authorities are still determining the identity and and motives of the assailants.
