At his room in Iloilo City, the most wanted drug lord of Western Visayas, Richard “Buang” Prevendido, met his end at the hands of the police amidst an assortment of amulets, bottles of oil and religious images that he is believed to use as security shields.

It all came to this on Friday last week.

According to Police Senior Supt. Marlon Tayaba, the Iloilo Provincial Police Director, it was all in vain: “What prevailed was the dedication of our law enforcers. It took a while, eight months, because he was quite elusive and enjoyed the protection of a group that tried to hide him from the law.”

Buang and his son, Jason, died in a firefight after they reportedly opted to shoot it out with the police contingent that arrived to serve an arrest warrant.

A paraffin test indicated that Buang was positive for gunpowder burns.

The Prevendido case is considered a significant accomplishment in the fight against illegal drugs in Iloilo.

Next in line would be subleaders of the Prevendido Drug Group, such as suspect Ernesto Bolivar as well as the Balume Drug Group Arturo Balume.

The message is unmistakable. Senior Supt. Marlon Tayaba warns: “Better for them to surrender and not make this more difficult. We will eventually find them if they don’t yield.”
