BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The flashfloods that struck Bacolod City Friday night destroyed 91 houses and damaged 102 others — a total of 193 — the city government showed.

The latest figures released by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and the Department of Social Services and Development Monday afternoon also showed 2,048 families, or 8,165 persons, in 14 barangays — 1, 27, 28, 35, 39, 40, 41, Singcang-Airport, Mandalagan, Taculing, Pahanocoy, Mansilingan, Alijis, and Bata — were affected.

Sally Abelarde, social welfare and development officer IV of DSSD, said the figures are still subject to validation and could increase. But the CDRRMO reported that most of the affected families returned homes after the floods subsided early Saturday morning, although some opted to remain in barangay halls.

The flashfloods were triggered by rains in the mountains near Bacolod that caused major rivers to overflow.

The floods and torrential rains also left hundreds of commuters stranded.

At least eight other local government units in Negros Occidental also reported flooding: the cities of Sipalay,  Bago City, Talisay, La Carlota, and the towns of Hinobaan, Murcia, Binalbagan, and Pontevedra, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Division said.
