MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police chief Ronald dela Rosa will be appointed to head the Bureau of Corrections after his mandatory retirement on turning 56 on January 21 next year.

President Rodrigo Duterte mentioned his plan to appoint Dela Rosa to the BuCor post at the Christmas part of the Malacañang Press Corps Tuesday night. This was confirmed It was later confirmed Wednesday morning by Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go.

At a press conference Tuesday, Dela Rosa said Duterte had promised him a “challenging” civilian position after he steps down from the PNP but did not reveal which agency he was headed for.

The BuCor is currently under the direct control of Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre III after its former head, Benjamin Delos Santos, resigned in July amid allegations of a resurgence of the drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.
