MANILA, Philippines — A barangay treasurer in Tondo, Manila died after his efforts to appease a drunken constituent led to fisticuffs early Thursday morning, March 1.

Barangay 152 Zone 14 chairman Vicente Rodriguez said Edgardo Maliclic, 46, had sought to calm down Michael Aparicio, who was captured on closed circuit television camera footage throwing stones at a house past 1 a.m.

An argument ensued between the two deteriorated into an exchange of blows. During a pause in the fighting, Aparicio lunged at Rodriguez, who fell to the ground unconscious.

The village official was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Aparicio claimed Rodriguez had challenged him to the fight and that he had no intention of killing his “friend.”
