5 dead, 53 hurt in Cebu City construction bunkhouse collapse

MANILA, Philippines — Five persons were confirmed dead and at least 53 injured when a bunkhouse at a construction site in Cebu City collapsed early Tuesday morning.

Survivor Rodivico dela Cruz said he was awakened by what he described as “like an earthquake” before he was buried under steel roofing. He managed to crawl his way to safety despite his injuries.

Two of the fatalities were identified as Carlos Calliwa and Iveen Villarin.

Abraham Lee Construction, 158 workers were sleeping in the bunkhouse when the incident happened.

City officials led by Vice Mayor Edgardo Napeña visited the accidents site.

Napeña promised assistance to the affected workers and would summon the developers to an investigation.
