BERLIN | British actor Robert Pattinson does not believe in true love, he said at the Berlin Film Festival on Friday, in contrast to the lovestruck pioneer he portrays in the western comedy period film “Damsel”.

Directed by David and Nathan Zellner, “Damsel” stars Pattinson as the wealthy Samuel Alabaster who traverses the Wild West in search of his love Penelope, played by Australian actress Mia Wasikowska.

“Damsel” is one of 19 films competing for the festival’s Golden Bear award.

Pattinson, 31, shot to global stardom in 2008 with the leading role of vampire Edward Cullen in “Twilight,” the first of five blockbuster films based on the bestselling novels by Stephanie Meyer which led to a high-profile offscreen romance with her co-star, Kristen Stewart.

However, they did not explicitly admit their relationship until Stewart was famously caught having an affair with her married “Snow White and the Huntsman” director, Rupert Sanders, in 2012.

Pattinson and Stewart split soon after.
