MANILA, Philippines -- Chevron Philippines Inc. on Thursday said work is underway to recover oil that spilled from its San Fernando, La Union terminal last Tuesday.
InterAksyon.com is still trying to find out how many ilters of oil were spilled.
“We have successfully recovered all spilled products from the area and all of the oil spill booms have been retrieved as of 9:00 pm last night. We have closed out our containment and recovery operations at the site,” said lawyer Raissa Bautista, spokesperson for the local unit of Chevron.
Bautista said part of the containment and recovery procedures in addressing a spill incident is to monitor the surroundings of the scene.
“We have engaged our environmental consultants at the site to do preliminary assessment and receptor scenario analysis in terms of impact to the local community and marine life,” she said.
“Our teams continue to coordinate with the local Coast Guard station, pier authorities, the operator of the terminal facility as well as local government officials, the regional DENR and the DOE. And we wish to thank them for working with us in successfully addressing this unfortunate incident,” she added.
Chevron said the spill happened when the terminal’s common receiving line sprung a leak while receiving diesel products from a marine supply vessel.
Bautista said a review team shall be formed shortly to determine the cause of this incident and to provide recommendations to avert further occurrences.
