MANILA, Philippines - State-run National Food Authority (NFA) is eyeing bids from Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam for the 120,000 metric tons of rice that would be imported through a government-to-government deal.
Angelito Banayo, NFA administrator, said the agency is looking at Thailand and Vietnam, but may invite Cambodia as well to bid for the supply deal.
"It will be a government-to-government deal, and no private sector will be involved. Right now, it’s Thailand and Vietnam, which we already have an agreement. We are still waiting for Cambodia to sign a MOA," Banayo said, referring to a memorandum of agreement.
"If they can sign, we will also invite Cambodia," he said.
Banayo said the agency wants a supplier that would allow the government to enjoy flexible payment terms.
"We want payment to start next year," he said, noting that the bulk of NFA's budget for this year has been set aside for local palay procurement.
