MANILA, Philippines - The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) has embarked on an anti-pilferage program even as it expands coverage in Luzon.
The private operator of the country's power transmission highway has contracted the services of 32 transmission line inspectors and caretakers in various host barangays in the province of Zambales.
"Coordination efforts with local authorities are part of NGCP’s program to curb the pilferage of transmission line hardware and materials in some communities," it said.
As a result of the joint efforts of the barangay and law enforcement agencies under NGCP's Task Force Kasangga anti-pilferage program, two suspected pilferers in Zambales and Pampanga were already apprehended. Cases were already filed against them for violating R.A. 7832 or the Anti-Electricity and Electric Transmission Lines/Materials Pilferage Act of 1994.
The law prohibits the possession, control, or custody of electric power transmission line/material by any person not engaged in the transmission or distribution of electric power, or in the manufacture of such electric power transmission line/material. Violators face 12 to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine ranging from P50,000 to P100,000.
To meet rising demand for electricity in Luzon, NGCP has undertaken the Luzon Substation Expansion I Project in Laoag, Ilocos Norte. The expansion will be energized on April 25.
Components of the project include upgrading of the existing 70-megavolt ampere load capacity of Laoag Substation to 100-MVA.
In Ilocos Region, other projects are the installation of a new 200-MVA transformer unit at Bauang Substation in La Union and the installation of another 50-MVA at Bantay Substation in Ilocos Sur. Both are also scheduled to go on stream next month.
