MANILA, Philippines - A Singaporean hotel operator is in talks with the Philippine government for the development of the Manila Post Office into a luxury hotel.
Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez told InterAksyon.com that the Privatization Management Office is in talks with the Fullerton Hotel Singapore for the possible conversion of the Manila Post Office.
"I don't know how developed the discussions are. Hopefully, the Fullerton Hotel buys it," Jimenez said on the sidelines of the Management Association of the Philippines General Membership Meeting in Makati.
Built in 1926, the Manila Post Office is considered a national historical treasure. The building overlooks the Pasig River, with main entrance facing the Liwasang Bonifacio.
Fullerton Hotel used to be known as the General Post Office Building before Sino Land (Hong Kong) Co. Ltd. acquired it from the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore in 1007 and turned it into a five-star luxury hotel.
A sister company of Far East Organization, Sino Land spent close to $300 million converting the Singapore Post Office into the Fullerton Hotel.
