MANILA, Philippines - Sales of Hyundai Asia Resources Inc. (HARI) surged 44 percent in the first quarter of the year.

In a statement, HARI said it sold 6,767 units in the January to March period, from 4,712 units in the same period last year.

Leading sales were the i10, Accent and the Elantra, causing passenger car sales to jump 127 percent year-on-year to 4,297 units.

In March alone, passenger car sales surged 159 percent to 1,316 units from a year ago's 509.

This led overall sales in March to grow 37 percent year-on-year.

“As the Philippine economic landscape continues to move from good to great, so does consumer confidence and Hyundai’s outstanding sales performance for Q1. We are optimistic that this trend will extend into Q2, with the Elantra making waves as Car of the Year for 2012, the launch of the new Hyundai EON, and our consistent brand promotion efforts,” Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo, HARI president and chief executive said.
