MANILA, Philippines - Despite tensions with China over Scarborough Shoal, the Philippines will solicit official development assistance (ODA) from Beijing for two irrigation projects and the upgrade of a fishing port in the northern part of Manila.
On the sidelines of the 45th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank Board of Governors, Rolando G. Tungpalan, deputy director-general of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), said Chinese ODA may fund the Irrigation Component Phase II of the Casecnan Multipurpose Irrigation and Power Project and the Umayam River Irrigation Project.
"We are moving now to get the other proposals for Chinese funding on stream," Tungpalan said.
"We are looking at Navotas Fish Port. But that's still going through the ICC technical board," he said, referring to the NEDA-Investment Coordinating Committee.
The Irrigation Component Phase II of the Casecnan Multipurpose Irrigation and Power Project will cost P7.05 billion, of which P5.29 billion would be sourced from China and the P1.76 billion balance from the Philippines as counterpart fund.
The Umayam River Irrigation Project would cost P1.56 billion, with China providing 87 percent of the funding.
The Upgrading and Rehabilitation of the Navotas Fish Port Complex would require P2.44 billion and involves building cold storage facilities, a wharf landing, an area for ship repair and other fishery and agriculture based industries, and a waste water treatment facility.
