MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine central bank on Thursday issued 10 million pieces of five-hundred peso banknotes bearing the logo of the 45th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Board of Governors.
In a statement, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said the fresh notes were issued "to express solidarity with the ADB's goal to free Asia and the Pacific from poverty." Citing ADB data, the BSP said the region is home to 1.8 billion poor people who have no access to basic goods, services and opportunities.
The five hundred peso banknote bearing the overprint of the ADB meeting logo features the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., father of President Benigno 'Noynoy' Aquino III.
The BSP said the banknotes would be made available to the general public through banks across the country.
Manila, which is home to the ADB's headquarters, is hosting the four-day meeting that will end on May 5.
