MANILA, Philippines - Manila and Beijing have made headway in efforts to resolve a phytosanitary issue that has barred the entry of Philippine Cavendish bananas into China.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said some 30 to 40 containers of Philippines bananas have already been given the green light to enter China.
“I can tell you that we have a bit of good news. We have progressed in resolving the phytosanitary issue. We received word today that 30 to 40 containers have been allowed to pass in China. So that’s a little bit of good news for us,” Valte said on Tuesday.
At least two measures have been adopted as well following a meeting between members of a Philippine delegation sent to China last week, Valte said.
First, the Department of Agriculture will double-check all banana exports before these leave the country. Second, once the exports arrive in China, these will be subjected to a joint inspection to resolve quickly any phytosanitary issue, Valte added.
Earlier, the Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association said it may not meet its export growth target this year due to the restrictions imposed by China. Domestic banana growers and exporters said they had lost at least P1.44 billion since China imposed tighter restrictions more than two months ago after it claimed that it had found pests in bananas from the Philippines.
