MANILA, Philippines - China has already allowed the entry of 170 containers of Philippine Cavendish bananas, a move that was hailed by Malacañang as “progress” in the efforts to address the more stringent quarantine measures being imposed by Beijing.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the figure already includes the 40 containers that were earlier given the green light to enter China.
Valte said both countries are adhering to the quarantine measures they have drafted to ensure that all of Beijing’s phytosanitary requirements are met.
Before leaving the country, the Department of Agriculture has been tasked to double check all banana exports to China, Valte said.
Once the exports arrive in China, these will be subjected to a joint inspection to resolve quickly any phytosanitary issue.
Valte earlier said the government is studying possible short-term assistance
to banana growers and exporters, but did not elaborate on whether this
would be in the form of a financial package.
The Philippine Banana Growers and Exporters Association said it may not meet its export growth target this year due to the restrictions imposed by China.
Domestic banana growers and exporters said they had lost at least P1.44 billion since China imposed tighter restrictions more than two months ago, claiming that it had found pests in bananas from the Philippines.
