MANILA – A unit of Cathay Pacific will mount flights from Clark International Airport.
In a statement, Victor Jose Luciano, president of Clark International Airport Corp. said Dragonair will operate starting May 29, linking the former US military base-turned-economic zone to 18 cities in China through Hong Kong.
“Clark has positioned itself as a hub for low-cost carriers but now attracting legacy carriers. These are now taking a serious look at Clark airport,” Luciano said.
He said Dragonair will be the second legacy carrier operating in Clark airport, after South Korea’s Asiana Airlines.
The entry of Dragonair will boost the growth of the Clark International Airport because “this airline offers travelers seamless connections to some 130 destinations worldwide,” said Luciano.
He said CIAC is targeting at least 1.5 million passengers by end of the year on the back of additional flights from Air Asia Philippines, Airphil Express, Seair-Tiger and Dragonair.
Aircraft movements at Clark runs to 292 flights per week both local and international.
In the first three months of this year, domestic passenger volume rose to 73,791 from last year’s 16,918.
“There have been an exponential growth in passengers especially in the domestic front were we obtained a 336 percent increase from January to May alone compared to the previous year,” said Luciano.
He said CIAC is expediting the construction of the P360 million phase two expansion of the Clark Terminal Building to accommodate the growing numbers of passengers. The current facility can accommodate two million passengers a year.
