MANILA – Three agencies in the economic cluster have asked Malacanang to give them authority to adjust user fees as they see fit.
Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said his department, as well as the Department of Budget and Management and the National Economic and Development Authority have sent a joint memorandum to the Office of the President, asking that they be allowed to raise their fees as well as of agencies under them.
"The move will provide for greater efficiency since at present, any increase on the fees and charges would depend upon the NEDA, making the process cumbersome," Purisima said.
“We are looking at adjusting user fees and rates of state firms commensurate to the increase in the cost of providing the service,” he said.
Government agencies charge the public certain fees in exchange for services rendered such as for processing driver’s licenses, certificates of birth, marriage and death, and clearance from the National Bureau of Investigation, among others.
Data from the Bureau of the Treasury showed that fees and charges contributed P32.434 billion to government coffers, or 11.7 percent higher than a year ago.
Some government agencies last updated their fees in the 1970s.
