MANILA - Semirara Mining Corp. has shelved a plan to use coal-to-liquid technology for power generation.
Isidro A. Consunji, Semirara Mining chief executive officer, said the company decided to drop the technology because "it is not cost effective to us."
The technology involves the conversion of coal into liquid fuel as an alternative to oil.
In 2011, Semirara Mining produced 7.19 million metric tons of coal from its operations in Antique. This output represents over 90 percent of the country's total production of the commodity.
At present, only H&WB Corp. is pursuing the development of a coal-to-liquid plant in the Philippines.
The proposed facility in Mindanao will use low-rank coal to produce about 60,000 barrels of liquid fuel per day.
