MANILA - Travellers Hotel International Group Inc. plans to put up more hotels in Newport City.

Kingson Sian, Alliance Global Group Inc. president, said the outlook for Travellers remains strong despite some cancellations in bookings from its Chinese clients. Travellers is a joint venture between AGI and Genting Hong Kong.

"China is not a major market for us, but obviously there were cancellations. Definitely, there's an impact, but I think it's going to come back just like Hong Kong," said Sian, referring to the slowdown in arrivals following the 2010 Rizal Park massacre of Chinese nationals by a retired Filipino police official.

Last month, China issued a travel advisory for its nationals ahead of the planned protests by Filipinos at Chinese embassies worldwide due to a standoff between the two countries at Panatag Shoal.

Sian said there has been strong all-around interest for the Philippines, especially from the Americans and the Koreans that filled the gap left by the Chinese.

"The business remains strong. The potential is there. We continue to look at new markets," he said.

"The international market continues to be very interesting for us to develop because of our partnership with Genting. We can't reach out to those markets easier than if we were to do it by ourselves," he added.

As a testament to robust demand, the AGI group is building more hotels in the 25-hectare Newport City, its township development across Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City.

Travellers is adding 200 more rooms in the five-star Marriott on top of the existing 342 rooms.

Construction is ongoing for two condotels: The Belmont Luxury Hotel and Savoy. Both hotel developments are nearly sold out.

It is also building the country's largest ballroom called the Marriot Grand Ballroom, which will be operational in 2014.

"We would not put money if there's no demand," Sian said.
