MANILA - Customers of Meralco should expect to pay more for their electricity next month after the Energy Regulatory Commission approved an increase in the distributor’s rate.
The ERC on Friday allowed Manila Electric Co. to adjust its maximum average price from P1.6012 per kilowatt-hour to P1.6303.
Charges that fall under distribution, supply and metering accrue to Meralco, unlike generation and transmission, both which the distributor collects in behalf of power plants and the grid operator.
Based on Meralco's earlier MAP proposal to the ERC, the impact of the tariff increase on its different customer classes are as follows:
- P1.20 per kilowatt-hour increase for residential customers with electricity consumption of up to 200 kilowatt-hours;
- P1.55 per kilowatt-hour increase for 201 to 300 kilowatt-hours;
- P1.89 per kilowatt-hour increase for 301 to 400 kilowatt-hours; and
- P2.48 per kilowatt-hour increase for 400 kilowatt-hours and above.
Residential customers account for more than 90 percent of the utility's 5.07 million connections.
Meralco's new MAP will be implemented from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.
The rate adjustment is in line with the Performance-Based Regulation set by the ERC, allowing utilities to adjust their rates based on spending requirements, service performance, among others.
