MANILA - The government, in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the Global Environment Facility, has kicked off a program to promote energy efficiency for the chemical, food and beverage, pulp and paper, and iron and steel sectors.
Energy Undersecretary Loreta G. Ayson said the three parties recently embarked on a week-long capacity building program with representatives of the said industries under the Philippine Industrial Energy Efficiency Project.
“Ensuring supply must also be complemented with other programs such as managing our energy demand. A more holistic approach must be made in our energy horizon to ensure that our rising demand will be met with ample supply with enough reserves,” she said.
The PIEEP is a 5-year joint project that addresses the need to implement energy efficiency measures in industry, one of the most energy intensive sectors in the country.
The project aims to implant an energy management standard (ISO 50001), systems optimization, and financial capability within the industry level with the view of strengthening the industrial competitiveness of the Philippines.
“We have to rethink our business-as-usual mind set in our business process flow. We must become mindful of the inefficiencies that do exist in our energy infrastructures and come up with solutions-based approaches,” Ayson said.
Energy Secretary Jose Rene D. Almendras earlier said the country would need over 600 megawatts of additional generating capacity in 2015 up to 2017 to meet growing demand for electricity
However, most of the power projects expected to meet these requirements are coal plants, which have been faced by opposition from various groups owing to environmental and health concerns.
