MANILA - The Alcantara group plans to put up eight hydroelectric power plants in the Visayas and Mindanao.
In an application with the Department of Energy, Alsons Energy Development Corp. said it will develop eight facilities with a combined capacity of over 50 megawatts. These include the following:
- in Maasim, Sarangani, the 8.7-megawatt Siguil 1, 3.2-megawatt Siguil 2 and 4.8-megawatt Siguil 3 projects;
- in Maitum, Sarangani, the 12-megawatt Kalaong 1, 6-megawatt Kalaong 2 and 4-megawatt Kalaong 3 projects; and
- in Negros Occidental, the 4-megawatt Bago 1 hydro project in San Carlos City and 10-megawatt Bago 2 hydro project in Don Salvador Benedicto.
Besides the hydro projects, Alson Energy is also putting up 200-megawatt and 100-megawatt coal plants in Sarangani and Zamboanga, respectively.
The Alcantara group's generating capacity portfolio stands at 155 megawatts, mostly from diesel-fired plants.
By 2016, it aims to raise its capacity to 555 megawatts once the coal projects and the acquisition of the 100-megawatt Iligan diesel plant from the government is completed.
The group won the bidding for the said plant in 2011 in an auction set by the Iligan City local government, but has yet to take over the facility.
Through listed holding firm Alsons Consolidated Resources Inc., the Alcantara group has interests in power generation, aquaculture and agribusiness, real property development and services.
