MANILA - Clark International Airport Corp. said the Department of Transportation and Communication will shell out P100 million for a study that would look into the viability of transforming the former US Air Force base into an alternative to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
“The Aquino government is serious in making Clark International Airport as the main gateway of the country,” said Victor Jose Luciano, CIAC president.
The study comes as carriers expand in Clark, driving passenger traffic to 547,556 in the first six months of the year, up 54-percent year-on-year.
Among the local carriers that mount flights from Clark are AirPhil Express, Cebu Pacific, Philippines AirAsia, Seair and ZestAir.
Foreign airlines that fly out of the former military base are Dragonair, Jin Air, Asiana Airlines, and Tiger Airways.
“Although we have announced the construction of a budget terminal there are other options to look at. With all these massive growth happening in Clark, we are thinking of bigger projects either an international airport or a combination of legacy and budget terminal,” Luciano had said.
