MANILA - The Philippines has exceeded its sugar production target for the current crop year, according to the Sugar Regulatory Administration.
In a report, SRA said production reached 2.243 million metric tons as of July 8, slightly above the 2.242 million target for the crop year ending August 2012.
“This will be our final estimate for crop year 2011-2012 since all sugarcane mills have already stopped operations,” said Rosemarie Gumera, SRA manager for planning and policy.
Gumera said the early closing of the milling season was due to the slowdown in the flow of sugarcane harvest going to mills as a result of the La Nina phenomenon.
This year’s production is 5.86 percent lower than last year's 2.382 million.
In December 2011, the SRA lowered its production estimates from 2.42 million to 2.242 million, triggered by reports from farmers and millers that the volume of harvest has decreased from the previous year.
