MANILA - The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines has begun the rehabilitation of the Binga substation in Northern Luzon to accommodate the increase in capacity of hydroelectric plants in the region.
Cynthia Perez-Alabanza, NGCP corporate communications manager, said the company allocated P404 million to rehabilitate the Binga substation located in Sitio Binga, Tinongdan in Itogon, Benguet.
The project involves the replacement of old power circuit breakers and associated equipment; installation, testing and commissioning of a new 50-megavolt ampere power transformer; and the construction of a control building, lineman's quarters, pump house and access roads.
The rehabilitation of the Binga substation is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2013.
The rehabilitation of the facility is part of NGCP's Ambuklao-Binga-San Manuel 230-kilovolt transmission project in Northern Luzon.
The transmission line project aims to upgrade the existing Ambuklao-Binga-San Manuel line to maintain the provision of N-1 contingency, given the increase in capacity of existing hydro plants in the region, such as the newly-rehabilitated Ambuklao and Binga generating facilities of Aboitiz Power Corp.
N-1 contingency refers to the ability of the power grid to maintain operations in case power facilities trip.
Alabanza said the transmission line project is on pre-construction stage.
Led by Henry Sy Jr. of the SM group and State Grid Corp. of China, NGCP is in charge of operating, maintaining and developing the country's power grid.
The company transmits high-voltage electricity through "power superhighways" that include the interconnected system of transmission lines and towers, substations and related assets.
