MANILA - Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines Christopher Thornely on Wednesday said any amendment to both countries' air service agreement would depend on Air Canada.
"We have an air service agreement with the Philippines. The Philippines have rights to land in Canada. They have a direct flight to Vancouver. I guess its a call of Air Canada if this will be a profitable destination for them," Thornley told reporters at the sidelines of the joint membership meeting of the Makati Business Club, Management Association of the Philippines and Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce.
"Air Canada tends to be a carrier that has a business model that depends quite heavily for its overseas trans-Pacific flights on business class, executive class carriage. I guess they will have to determine if this market will support that," the ambassador said.
Earlier, Philippine Airlines, the only local carrier flying to Canada, requested an increase in flights to Canada from four per week to 14.
PAL's Manila-Vancouver-Manila flights have a 90-percent load factor, using Airbus A-340.
Eighty thousand Filipinos work in Vancouver alone.
