MANILA - The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines said it is on schedule in completing several projects aimed at improving the operations of substations in Southern Luzon.

In a report, NGCP said the capacity expansion of the Dasmarinas substations will likely be completed by the first quarter of 2013.

The improvement involves the installation of additional capacity both in the 500-kiloVolt and 230-kiloVolt substations in Cavite.

Begun in September 2011, the P618 million project also involves the installation of 300 megavolt amperes additional capacity to the 230/115-kiloVolt power transformer; the replacement of two 500-kiloVolt, 15 units of 230-kiloVolt and two units of 115-kiloVolt power circuit breakers, which will increase the reliability of the entire substation.

The expansion of the facilities will allow the grid to maintain the provision for N-1 contingency during times when the Ilijan natural gas plant in Batangas as well as the Quezon and Pagbilao coal plants in Quezon are used for maximum dispatch.

N-1 contingency enables the power grid to continue to operate in case a major power facility trips.

NGCP is also expanding the Tayabas substation to allow all possible generation dispatch scenarios for the power plants in Quezon and the Bicol region.

The expansion involves the installation of additional 600 megavolt amperes, 500/230-kiloVolt transformer and the improvement of the 500-kiloVolt power circuit breakers and substation accessories control, protection and communication system.

Started in June 2011, the P295 million project is expected to be finished during the fourth quarter of 2012.

NGCP said it also implemented a nationwide power circuit breakers modernization and replacement project as part of efforts to expand and modernize its power transmission facilities.

The company kicked off the project with the replacement of circuit breakers at the Labo substation in Camarines Norte and Gumaca substation in Quezon.

The project worth P73 million includes the supply and installation of four and two 230-kiloVolt power circuit breakers, respectively.

Work on the project commenced in August 2010 and is expected to be finished in the fourth quarter of the year.
