MANILA - The Department of Energy will establish test centers to identify the energy efficiency of household appliances.

Secretary Jose Rene D. Almendras said a plan is under way for the establishment of facilities that will check the electricity cost and consumption of appliances, starting with the most commonly used ones.

"Doing right is buying energy efficient appliances, being bright is doing that because you’re gonna save money. So we’re really supporting that, we’re doing that with the buildings now. We have now finalized the standard on how energy efficiency is going to be measured so the same with appliances po it’s going to happen," he said.

The DOE next month will begin identifying the energy efficiency of TV sets available in the market.

Other appliances would follow, depending on the DOE's budget.

"We want to set up a real clear convention na pag nakita ng consumer itong numerong ito, maiintindihan niya at maco-compare niya," Almendras said.

He said consumers should take advantage of energy efficient technologies because these can help cut electricity expenditures by as much as a third.

The Philippines is home to Asia's highest electricity rates, topping even those of industrialized countries in the region.

At present, manufacturers are required to tag their products with Energy Efficiency Rating labels to guide consumers on how an appliance can potentially impact their electricity bills.

A high EER rating translates to a high energy efficiency, thus consumers who buy appliances tagged as such should enjoy lower rates.

Almendras said the DOE needs to set up test centers to ensure that these companies' claims are legitimate.

"We need to test it para kapag sinabi niya na itong appliance na to will only consume this much tapos yun pala hindi - unfair yun sa consumer. Thus the need for a testing laboratory and we will certify," he added.
