MANILA - A three-year reforestation project benefiting communities in Bohol that host power transmission facilities is on track, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines said.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, NGCP, and select members of the Cabatuan United Farmers Association conducted the joint inspection to assess the activities of the Forest Tree Plantation Project in Barangay Cabatuan, Danao, Bohol.

The inspection covered seedling production, plantation establishment, fertilizer and pesticide procurement, and maintenance and protection.

The coordinating bodies formalized their commitment to the project through a Memorandum of Agreement signed on September 14, 2011, when NGCP agreed to accomplish a three-year reforestation project after clearing certain parts of Bohol for a project.

As the country’s sole power transmission service provider and system operator, NGCP operates and maintains high-voltage electrical facilities like transmission lines and substations spread throughout thousands of communities nationwide.

"NGCP regularly implements reforestation and fruit tree seedling dispersal activities to replenish the trees affected by transmission projects," the company said in a statement.

NGCP’s three-year reforestation project in Barangay Sta. Catalina, Sagbayan entails planting 8,000 seedlings on a five-hectare timberland area. The project also requires the establishment of a tree nursery and the planting of trees from the said nursery in suitable areas.

The corporation will implement another three-year reforestation project in Barangay Cabatuan, Danao with the same number of tree seedlings as in Sta. Catalina.

NGCP also provided 6,000 indigenous fruit tree seedlings such as lanzones, cacao, coffee and mango to benefit the nearby communities.
