MANILA -Prices of fish and vegetables rose amid torrential rains and widespread flooding in Metro Manila and many parts of Luzon, but the Department of Trade and Industry has assured ample supply of other food items, clean drinking water, and other basic commodities in markets and retail stores.
"Our check today indicated adequate supply. "Maraming bukas na groceries at supermarkets," Trade Secretary Gregory Domingo told InterAksyon on Tuesday night.
Prices of basic goods - save for vegetables and saltwater fish - are stable, the DTI chief said.
Fish and vegetable prices have inched up by P10 to P40 and P10 to P20, respectively, as supplies ran low due to incessant raining.
"Umuulan kaya hindi makalabas ang mga mangingisda. Ang supply ng mga gulay, mula sa malayo, mahirap i-deliver dahil baha ang mga kalye," said Domingo.
Today, the DTI will conduct a special price monitoring of basic and prime commodities such as bread, cooking oil and canned goods, among others, in wet markets, groceries and supermarkets to ensure that there would be no profiteering nor hoarding amid the bad weather, Domingo said.
The DTI usually monitors prices on a weekly basis, but President Benigno Aquino III on Tuesday ordered the department to be on the lookout for unwarranted price spikes and possible hoarding.
